Advancing sustainability to propel long term success

Julia Mair, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer and Head of Sustainability at Clarivate, discusses the driving forces for advancing sustainability at Clarivate and highlights how we’re bringing it full circle as part of everything we do.

Over the past few years, businesses have increasingly recognized their responsibility to prioritize sustainability in their supply chains, internal structures and partnerships. There has been a notable corporate shift in focus – from creating awareness while standing on the sidelines – to jumping in, taking action and driving real, measurable change. It’s not a one-way street either. The environmental and societal influences and sense of responsibility fueling our corporate strategies are coming full circle to have a significant impact on our growth opportunities, risk exposure and long-term success.

A powerful force for change

Issues such as climate change, social justice, diversity and inclusion and sustainable supply chains, to name a few, are no longer water cooler conversations for a concerned few or a brief acknowledgement on dates like Earth Day. These are consistent, prioritized Board-level conversations between business leadership, investors and advisors who understand the complexity of these challenges and are committed to ongoing investment and strategic support.

They also know that shifting the company’s focus to become a greater force for change is not only an opportunity to create lasting business value, but it is also a societal imperative. Beyond NGOs and governments, companies – both big and small – are driving real and impactful progress towards solving some of the world’s biggest problems.

The whole world is watching

At Clarivate, we recognize the urgent imperative of embedding sustainability so that it touches every function, every region, every line of business and every colleague. For us, sustainability is front and center – part of everything we do. We also know that sustainability is clearly tied to corporate profits, shareholder value and competitive advantage. Why? Because it’s tied to the very elements that impact these outcomes: happy colleagues, happy customers, happy society, happy planet.

Today, more than ever, people have choices to make – where they work, where they shop, what businesses to support. Every choice we make, no matter how seemingly small, can serve to improve and nurture our world. That’s why at Clarivate, we’re committed to maintaining the highest level of integrity and ethics, protecting our planet, empowering our colleagues to thrive and building collaborative global communities. We believe that when we come together, we have the power to make a measurable impact on our business, our communities, our world and our shared future.

“Our commitment to sustainability is a strategic imperative, bringing environmental and societal issues to the forefront and empowering our corporate leaders and colleagues to play a critical role in driving real change.”

Julia Mair, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer and Head of Sustainability

Progress and commitments for long term success

We’re proud of the progress we’ve made towards becoming a more sustainable company. In our first annual Clarivate Sustainability Report, we share our goals and aspirations, celebrate our accomplishments thus far and fulfill our promise of transparency throughout this evolution. It’s very fitting that we’re publishing this right before Earth Day as the world celebrates our planet and the vital need to protect our environment.

We still have much to do and we are learning more every day. Of course, we are measuring every bit of progress along the way. Our goals are published in alignment with and support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We’ve also put real stakes in the ground such as becoming carbon neutral by 2024, being recognized as one of the top companies to work for and being listed on both the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and FTSE4Good Index based on our 2023 performance. I’m proud to highlight that we have five global and growing colleague resource groups to advance sustainability initiatives throughout our company and communities around the world.

At Clarivate, we cultivate and celebrate the power of human ingenuity, as it fuels the discovery of game-changing innovations and uncovers solutions to some of the world’s most complex problems. We believe that there is no problem that cannot be solved and that we all have a role to play to make a positive, lasting impact on our communities, businesses and world.
