The movement to reform research assessment is gathering pace in Europe, as in many other parts of the world. A growing number of research organisations, funders and universities are committing to principles including greater recognition for the diversity of research contributions, increasing qualitative evaluation, and abandoning the “inappropriate” use of metrics through an EU-coordinated agreement.

The recent creation of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment − a group charged with helping to implement these reforms − marked a significant milestone in efforts to turn these proposed changes into reality.

But the road ahead is complex, with differing views on the pace, priorities and pitfalls of reform.

This Research Professional News Live debate looks at the next steps for the reform effort. Hear from expert panellists about:

  • What changes to research assessment can and should achieve
  • The challenges to implementation
  • What universities and their researchers should be doing now to align themselves with the direction of travel
