Evaluating natural sciences research with bibliometric data – University of Malaya

Founded in 1905 as the King Edward VII College of Medicine, the University of Malaya (UM) is Malaysia’s oldest university. In 2016, UM was named as one of  the Reuters Top 75 Asia’s Most Innovative Universities, a ranking which identifies educational institutions that are doing the most to advance science, invent new technologies and help drive the global economy.

Today, like many other universities worldwide, UM is facing many challenges in measuring its research impact. UM receives approximately MR347 million (USD 85.3 million) in annual research funding, more than 80 percent of which comes from the Malaysian government. Securing such a huge research funding annually is no easy task.
