Salt Lake City | Utah | 2023 | Market Overview Brief

Salt Lake City is a sophisticated healthcare delivery market where several advanced elements are present, including population health management, risk-based payments, clinical integration, and clinical breakthroughs. Intermountain Healthcare is a dominant player in the provider and payer space, controlling more than half of inpatient discharges and more than 30 percent of Salt Lake City’s insured lives through SelectHealth, the market’s largest payer. Two other IDNs–University of Utah Health and Steward Health Care—also have integrated health plans and physician networks, giving them high degrees of control over care. In the payer space, national carriers UnitedHealthcare and Cigna compete with IDN-owned health plans by offering self-insured products and consumer-driven health plans, which are popular with Salt Lake City employers; UnitedHealthcare also carved out a competitive niche with Medicare Advantage enrollment.
