The COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt all healthcare sectors in Omaha. Patient volume has plummeted as health systems and physician groups postpone revenue-generating elective and nonurgent procedures, leading to financial challenges for providers. To continue access to care, providers are rapidly deploying telehealth solutions such as virtual visits. Payers, on the other hand, are reporting profits because sharp declines in expensive, elective surgeries during the pandemic reduced healthcare expenditures. While providers face major financial and care management challenges, they are receiving some relief from the federal government. Amid this disruption, health systems in Omaha, including CHI Health, Nebraska Medicine, and Methodist Health System, continue to expand their reach through new facility construction. These developments will increase access to services and create new opportunities for drug sales. Furthermore, Nebraska’s newly expanded Medicaid program means as many as 123,000 low-income Nebraskans are newly eligible for Medicaid.
