Competition among Milwaukee’s largest health systems will define the market in coming years. Advocate Aurora Health is building a new hospital in Mount Pleasant and purchased minority stake in the insurer Quartz. While the system's merger with Michigan-based Beaumont Health did not pan out, it will likely align with another system. Ascension and Froedtert Health are building acute-care and outpatient facilities in Milwaukee's suburbs. As these IDNs grow, they will likely push more of Milwaukee’s numerous physicians into employment, threatening the market’s independent physician sector. Health systems are also becoming more active in health plan ownership, but are unlikely to unseat the dominant national carriers that steer Milwaukee’s payer sector.
