Memphis | Tennessee | 2023 | Market Overview

Memphis was poised to become one of the nation most consolidated markets following the acquisition of Tenet two Saint Francis Healthcare facilities by leading integrated delivery network Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, but the FTC blocked that acquisition in November 2020, citing a reduction in competition and elevated healthcare rates. The acquisition attempt speaks to a years-long trend in the Southeast, which has seen mergers and acquisitions shake up market share and dynamics in places like Nashville, Atlanta and Memphis. We are likely to see consolidation continue in Memphis as providers strained with COVID-19 and an above average number of chronic disease patients turn to the financial and clinical resources of larger employed or clinically integrated groups. While prescription drug utilization may suffer from the continued decrease in medical visits, telemedicine is being embraced by local health systems as a viable alternative to in-person care. Patients that forego telemedicine to bridge the care gap could end up seeking emergent care for worsened conditions or may need longer-term medication therapy.
