Results show Russia is on the rise whilst the USA remains the undisputed leader

Moscow, April 13, 2018Round University Ranking (RUR) Rankings Agency has published its annual World University Rankings, which evaluates the performance of 761 universities around the world. The ranking methodology is based on three key principles: inclusiveness, balance, and stability. Performance is measured against 20 indicators related to teaching, research, international diversity, and financial sustainability.

RUR partnered with Clarivate Analytics to collect statistical data from its Global Institutional Profiling Project, bibliometric data exclusively from the Web of Science, and reputation data from its Academic Reputation Survey. This survey is conducted annually with 10,000 respondents from across the globe.

Despite the fact that four fewer USA universities made the list this year than in 2017 and six less than in 2016, USA universities continue to dominate the leader board.

Russia took second place in the world in terms of overall representation in the rankings with 70 institutions, up from third place in 2017 with 67 universities. The UK has fallen to third place with 67 participating universities.

At a press-conference announcing the publication of the RUR World University Rankings Oleg Solovyov, General Director, RUR Rankings Agency, stated, “A slight decrease is currently visible in the representation of traditional leaders of the rating – the United States and Great Britain in favour of developing countries: China, Russia, India, Turkey, Iran, Iraq. One of the key conclusions that we have noted over the past three years: Russian universities and, more broadly, universities of the BRICS countries and other emerging economies show higher positions in the special rating on the quality of teaching. The Russian leader, Moscow State University, took 153rd place in the general ranking and 48th on teaching. The data of the RUR rating confirm a rather high level of education in the countries of developing economies.”

Oleg Utkin, Managing Director, Clarivate Analytics Russia & CIS added: “Our data and research analytics tools are trusted by more than 20 million users worldwide to power the most prestigious global university rankings including RUR Rankings Agency. Clarivate Analytics attaches special significance to the quality of articles, publications, journals, books, conference proceedings, and patents, indexed in the Web of Science. We highly value our partnership with RUR and look forward to continuing our professional dialogue with its experts.”

Clarivate Analytics data are used by influential ranking organisations such as the Academic Ranking of the World Universities (also known as Shanghai Rankings), CWTS Leiden Ranking, U.S. News Global University Rankings, U-Multirank European Ranking, Reuters News Rankings, University Ranking by Academic Performance – URAP (Turkey), I-UGR Rankings (Spain), National Taiwan University Rankings, among many others.
