Working at Clarivate: Life as head of the human resources team for India

Communicating our culture and values: meet Sathyam Pattnaiik, Clarivate’s ‘People Person’ in Bengaluru

Sathyam joined Clarivate as Vice President of Human Resources about three years ago. He is based in the Bengaluru office, responsible for leading and supporting colleagues across India and connecting with Clarivate’s wider HR teams globally. With more than 20 years’ experience in HR, his expertise includes organizational effectiveness, culture and change management, talent and leadership development.

In this blog, he talks about two of his notable achievements since joining Clarivate: overseeing human resources in India during the separation from Thomson Reuters and his central role in the organization of the Visions & Values tour’s recent Indian leg.

Overseeing organizational change

For me, one of the highlights of my career was also the biggest challenge – overseeing our local human resources function during the separation from Thomson Reuters. This was quite an unsettling time for a lot of the people here and, as part of the change, I had to set up a completely new HR function and help to build up Clarivate’s brand as an excellent employer in India.

To ensure the transition went as smoothly as possible, change management was high on the agenda for the first six months and my team and I worked very hard to keep everyone fully informed of everything that was happening. Throughout this period, it was vital for us to communicate clearly and quickly what was going on to all colleagues affected, providing reassurance and maintaining motivation.

I’m proud that, with the support of my wonderful HR team, we were able to maintain a level of consistency for our colleagues throughout the transition in terms of culture and experience.

Motivating and engaging our people

Working in HR, another big part of my role at Clarivate is attracting and retaining colleagues – ensuring everyone remains engaged and motivated. In India, a core focus was to ensure that we have a good hiring mechanism to keep attracting the best talent, as well as lowering the attrition rate for Clarivate in India.

When I joined Clarivate, we were about a thousand people strong in India and now we have grown to around 1,570 people. I have been thrilled to be able to welcome so many new colleagues on board. In order to boost engagement among colleagues, we continue to run an array of programs that boost engagement and have social committees across all locations in India. These efforts have contributed to the region having one of the highest colleague engagement scores in Clarivate, which in my position is personally satisfying.

Vision & Values tour arriving in India

As part of our continued efforts to improve engagement, the major project I’ve been working on recently at Clarivate is the execution of the Vision & Values tour in India. This is a global tour being undertaken by Jerre Stead, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Clarivate, to improve understanding, engagement and excitement around our vision and values. The tour started in 2019 and is continuing into this year, with Jerre meeting, speaking to and listening to Clarivate colleagues around the world.

It has been a pleasure to be a part of the management team for the Indian leg, which included visits to four locations across the country from January 7-10, 2020: Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai. For me, the highlights were the interactive sessions entitled ‘Juice with Jerre’ and ’Lunch with Managers,’ when Jerre spoke frankly with colleagues and answered their questions face-to-face about his plans and vision for the future of the organization, especially here in India.

Many people took the opportunity to ask Jerre questions, with topics including how Clarivate plans to grow in India and what trends and developments we can expect to see in the region. There were also two-hour activity sessions when Jerre interacted with colleagues and gave his insights into how we can live and breathe our company values in our day-to-day work. I’m truly excited about the impact the tour will have and can’t think of a better way that we at Clarivate in India could have started off the New Year!
