Introduction
All patrons, regardless of ability, need access to scholarly information. Clarivate is committed to providing all our users with a fully accessible experience for research, teaching and learning.
At Clarivate, we make every effort to ensure that our platforms – including RapidILL – can be used by everyone. RapidILL is continually designed and developed to meet Level AA of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2).
Users of RapidILL should be able to:
- Navigate most of the web application using a keyboard only
- Navigate to most of the web application using a screen reader
- Experience a logical and consistent tab order for majority of the interactive elements
- Zoom in up to 200% using browser tools without text spilling off the screen.
- Programmatically determine the name, role, state, and value of most user interface components.
There may be some parts of this website that are not fully accessible:
- At 400% zoom, some elements do not reflow as expected. Parts of the content become cut off, and in some pages horizontal scrolling is required to view information.
- Some interface elements lack clear programmatic labels, roles, or values, which may hinder assistive technologies from accurately interpreting their function.
- Several elements have missing or low‑contrast focus indicators, or indicators that depend solely on color. Additionally, some content on the page has insufficient color contrast.
- Error messages, including success and failure notifications, are not announced by screen readers in several fields.
- The site does not include a mechanism is available to bypass blocks of content, which is required to help keyboard and screen reader users bypass repeated navigation.
Accessibility features and gaps
Content accessibility
RapidILL is an interlibrary loan software tailored for article and book chapter requests. RapidILL provides interlibrary lending tools for peer-to-peer sharing and document delivery. RapidILL does not control the accessibility of content supplied by participating libraries. We encourage libraries to upload accessible content to RapidIL.
PDF Text Accessibility Enhancements

When a lender uploads or delivers a file to RapidILL, the system first checks whether the file is machine-readable. If it is, the file is delivered to the borrowing library as usual. If it is not, RapidILL automatically runs it through the OCR process before final delivery. The automated OCR service automatically detects the languages in a document’s text.
The integration of automated OCR enables text within previously image-based PDFs to be recognized and interpreted by assistive technologies, improving access for users who rely on screen readers, text navigation, and other accessibility tools.

How we tested this platform
The accessibility of RapidILL is a continual effort at Clarivate. Accessibility standards are built into our design, and style guides and included as part of requirements in our software development and quality assurance pipeline.
RapidILL code is checked for accessibility using a range of automated and manual checks including but not limited to:
- TPGI’s Color Contrast Analyzer
- Deque’s axe DevTools accessibility testing tool
- ANDI (Accessible Name & Description Inspector) tool
- Chrome Developer Tools
- HeadingsMap
- Keyboard-access manual testing and assessment
RapidILL is tested on the latest versions of Chrome, and Edge, and on a Windows computer.
Accessibility testing is part of our ongoing development lifecycle in addition to annual reviews. The last full accessibility audit was conducted in March 2026. The test was carried out internally at Clarivate.
