ShanghaiRanking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities 2026 Press Release

ShanghaiRanking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities 2026 Press Release

The 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) is released today by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. Since 2003, ARWU has been presenting the world’s top universities annually based on transparent methodology and objective third-party data. It has been recognized as the precursor of global university rankings and the most trustworthy one. This year, more than 2,500 institutions were scrutinized, and the best 1,000 universities in the world are published.

Harvard University remains No. 1 in the world, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The University of Cambridge holds fourth place, while the University of California, Berkeley completes the global top five. Princeton University moves up to sixth, ahead of the University of Oxford in seventh. Columbia University ranks eighth, the University of Chicago ninth and the California Institute of Technology tenth.

Leadership at the top remains highly concentrated

Universities in the United States continue to dominate the highest positions, accounting for eight of the global top 10 and 14 of the top 20. The United Kingdom has two universities in the top 10—Cambridge and Oxford—and three in the top 20, with University College London ranked 17th.

Continental Europe is led by Paris-Saclay University at No. 13, followed by ETH Zurich at No. 19. Technical University of Munich, ranked 45th, is Germany’s highest-placed institution. The University of Copenhagen leads Denmark at No. 34, while Karolinska Institute rises nine places to joint 41st and becomes Sweden’s highest-ranked university.

Asian universities expand their presence among the world’s top 100

Tsinghua University remains the highest-ranked university in Asia at No. 18. Peking University moves up one place to No. 22, while Zhejiang University shares 24th place and Shanghai Jiao Tong University advances three places to No. 27. The University of Tokyo ranks 30th and remains Japan’s top university. National University of Singapore rises to No. 53, and Nanyang Technological University advances to joint 84th.

Universities in China’s mainland record a particularly strong showing. Sixteen institutions are now placed in the global top 100, up from 13 in 2025. Southeast University enters the top 100 at joint 89th, Harbin Institute of Technology at No. 97 and Tianjin University at joint 98th. Xi’an Jiaotong University and Central South University each rise 13 places, to No. 79 and No. 83 respectively, while Sichuan University climbs ten places to joint 77th.

Across the full published ranking, China’s mainland has 234 universities in the global top 1,000, the largest number of any country or region, followed by the United States with 187. The United Kingdom has 57 institutions, Germany 51 and Italy 42.

The global top 100 becomes more geographically balanced

The 2026 global top 100 includes universities from 18 countries and regions. The United States accounts for 37 institutions, while China’s mainland has 16 and the United Kingdom eight. Europe and Asia/Oceania each contribute 30 universities to the top 100, alongside 40 from the Americas.
