Under The Sea – The State of Ocean Research Today

Ideas to Innovation - Season Two

Episode description

The fate of the Earth is closely tied to our oceans. Given the toll that humans have exacted on the marine environment within a relative handful of decades, the need for detailed scientific scrutiny of our ocean basins has never been more acute. A new global report from Clarivate highlights the growing body of research in this area, particularly around sustainability and topics such as microplastics in the ocean. The report finds that ocean acidification, marine pollution, and over-fishing have caused tremendous damage to Earth’s oceans and the life within them.

The report’s two authors, Ross Potter and Brody Pearson, are interviewed in this episode of Ideas To Innovation Season 2. Ross is a senior data scientist at the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). His extensive research experience with academia includes NASA-related post-doctoral positions at the Luna and Planetary Institute in Houston, Texas, and at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Brody is an assistant professor at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. He was recently part of the intergovernmental panel on Climate Change Sixth Assessment report team.
