Clarivate, the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Higher Education Press of China Release Annual Joint Report to Identify 188 Engineering Fronts

Identifying important topics for the future of engineering science and technology

London, U.K., December 15, 2022Clarivate Plc (NYSE: CLVT), a global leader in providing trusted information and insights to accelerate the pace of innovation, the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and the Higher Education Press of China today released their sixth annual collaborative report – Engineering Fronts 2022. The report, which was launched at a joint forum in Beijing, has identified 188 of the most important areas in engineering research and development.

In the report, an engineering front is defined as a key direction which is forward looking, leading and exploratory. It has a major influence, plays a leading role in the future of engineering science and technology and serves as an important guide for cultivating innovation.

The Engineering research fronts focus on theoretical exploration and are identified using citation data from Clarivate’s Web of Science™ as well as nominations by experts in China’s engineering research institutions. The engineering development fronts focus on the practical application of engineering science and technology and are identified by analysis of patent data in Derwent Innovation™ from Clarivate as well as nominations by industry experts in China.

This year’s report identified 95 global engineering research fronts and 93 engineering development fronts in nine fields, aligned to the corresponding academic divisions under CAE, which are:

  • Mechanical and vehicle engineering
  • Information and electronic engineering
  • Chemical, metallurgical, and materials engineering
  • Energy and mining engineering
  • Civil, hydraulic, and architectural engineering
  • Environmental and light textile engineering
  • Agriculture
  • Medicine and health
  • Engineering management

In the report, 29 key engineering research fronts and 29 key engineering development fronts of significant interest are highlighted among the 188 engineering fronts.

Several engineering fronts in the 2022 report are mirrored by the research fields of Nobel Prize recipients in recent years. Engineering fronts on quantum information science are closely related to the award-winning research by this year’s Nobel winners in Physics. Genome editing, which was recognized by the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was also reflected in several engineering fronts in this year’s report.
