Clarivate Analytics Invites Applications for 2018 Eugene Garfield Award for Innovation in Citation Analysis

Deadline extended to the 31st July 

Global award of US$25k to identify and recognize innovative research utilizing citation data

PHILADELPHIA, June 4 2018—Clarivate Analytics, the global leader in providing trusted insights and analytics to enable researchers to accelerate discovery, invites researchers to apply for the Eugene Garfield Award for Innovation in Citation Analysis. Launched in 2017, in memory of Dr. Garfield and his pioneering work in scientometrics, this international award will recognize researchers at any stage of their career developing an innovative approach in citation analysis that improves the impact of how scientific research is evaluated.

Dr. Garfield developed citation databases that changed how scientists find and assess scholarly literature. This led to the creation of the flagship scientific data platform the Web of Science, which indexes content and interconnected citations from the world’s premier scientific and scholarly journals. Google co- founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin referenced Dr. Garfield’s work on citation analysis in their patent for PageRank, the algorithm that powers their eponymous search engine.

The winner will be awarded US$25k and Clarivate Analytics will provide the successful applicant with support and complimentary access to Web of Science data. The awardee will also be invited to give a research presentation at the 23rd Science and Technology Indicators Conference in Leiden, Netherlands and to meet and collaborate with the team at Clarivate’s prestigious Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), founded by Dr. Garfield.

“The Eugene Garfield Award for Innovation in citation analysis offers an opportunity to support and extend the excellent work that Dr. Garfield and his collaborators conducted in mapping and analyzing science. To be successful, we seek novel approaches in citation analysis that can be applied to challenges in information retrieval, science, technology and innovation indicators or in studying the science of science. The emphasis is on innovation and not on extensions to existing research themes. ISI has a strong commitment to support and engage with the community and we look forward to reading the applications.”

The inaugural award submissions covered a wide range of topics including: knowledge generation and dissemination, scholarly publishing trends, author contributions and credit, team science and the science of science. Applications were received from across 18 countries in Europe, North America, Asia, the Middle East and South and Central America. Dr. Jian Wang, Assistant Professor at the Science Based Business Program, Faculty of Science, Leiden University in the Netherlands, was selected for the award based on his work at the intersection of information science, economics and public policy.

How to apply.

  • Applicants are required to submit PDF files in English and a standard CV
  • A letter of recommendation (e.g. from supervisor or department chair;)
    and the application form (see link below) to GarfieldAward@Clarivate.com
  • The award will be paid in a single instalment and may be used to cover travel expenses to the STI conference in Leiden
  • The successful applicant will be encouraged to publish a paper on his or her research within 12 months of receiving the award (exceptions allowed).

A committee of scientometricians and information scientists will evaluate applications for novelty and innovation and the winner will be notified in August 2018. The deadline for applications is 11:00 PM US (Eastern Standard Time) July 21st, 2018.
