Celebrating Thailand’s research excellence and strengthening partnerships
The Thailand Research Fund (TRF) is a major national funding agency that aims to develop a high-quality research community in Thailand, providing grants and assisting researchers with management. The Office of Higher Education Commission Thailand (OHEC) is responsible for Thailand’s higher education, overseeing 170 institutions at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. 2019 marks the fourth year in which Clarivate Analytics has partnered with these two important organizations.
The overarching theme at the 2019 TRF-OHEC Congress focused on the importance of molding primary research to meet the innovation needs of Thailand’s national agenda. In his speech on the occasion, the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand noted that research needs to be aligned to create opportunities and impact for the society at large. With this as the backdrop for the congress, the organizers presented the fourth annual “TRF-OHEC-Clarivate Analytics Research Excellence Award.” This award aims to recognize Thailand-based researchers for their outstanding performance and contribution to their specialty fields and for the positive impact of their work on the nation as a whole.
The 2018 Research Excellence Award recipient is:
- Associate Professor Dr. Siriporn Jungsuttiwong from Ubon Ratchathani University
A chemist, Dr. Jungsuttiwong has published on solar cells, hydrogen storage and other applications.
As with the previous awards for 2015 to 2017, the data used for the “TRF-OHEC-Clarivate Analytics Research Excellence Award” for 2018 were based on citations to the researchers’ published papers in high-quality international journals as indexed in Clarivate Analytics Web of Science, the world’s most trusted and largest publisher-neutral source of multidisciplinary citation databases for research discovery and citation analytics. A new element to the methodology in the latest prize included documenting evidence of commercial and societal impact of the candidate’s research through patents substantiated by data from Clarivate Analytics Derwent Innovation, a proprietary patent research application that provides access to globally trusted, curated patent intelligence and scientific literature.
Highly Cited Researchers 2018
At the conference, we took the opportunity to also honor the globally recognized Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researchers 2018 from Thailand. The full methodology for designation as a Highly Cited Researcher can be found here. In 2017, five Thailand-based Highly Cited Researchers were identified. In 2018, the number increased to 11. This is another indication of Thailand’s growing research impact in recent years.
The 2018 Highly Cited Researchers recognized during the event were:
- Dr. Sootawat Benjakul, Prince of Songkla University
- Dr. Somchai Wongwises, King Mongkut University of Technology Thonburi
- Dr. Kevin D. Hyde, Mae Fah Luang University
