Precision in practice:
How we measure AI leadership
Innovation leadership isn’t a perception; it’s a measurable pattern in the invention record.
The Clarivate AI50 applies the Derwent Strength Index (DSI) to evaluate each invention across five dimensions: influence, investment, success, rarity and international reach. This patent‑based framework removes noise and provides a consistent, comparable signal of true inventive strength.
Measuring AI leadership:
Contribution × Focus
AI leadership shows up clearly in invention data. The Clarivate AI50 uses two complementary signals:
Contribution: Share of the world’s high-strength AI inventions; capturing technical impact, not volume.
Focus: How much of an organization’s overall inventive activity is AI-related, revealing strategic prioritization.
Together, these signals create a stable, global view of who leads, who follows and how organizations differ in their paths to AI leadership. This lens prioritizes quality over noise, distinguishes strategy, and enables practical action.
Turning insight into action:
Data and APIs that operationalize the AI50
If you want to bring the Clarivate AI50 signals directly into your own analytics environment, the underlying datasets are available via data feed or API, including:
- Global Patent Data — enriched multi-jurisdiction records with assignee/owner, legal status, citations and more.
- DWPI — invention‑level expert summaries used to identify, classify and interpret high‑strength inventions.
- DPCI — forward and backward citations correlated at invention level for influence and network analysis.
- AI50 dataset — the organizations and inventions behind outsized high-strength AI activity.
