The power of data and metrics – Tsinghua University Scholars Repository

Tsinghua University (THU), China’s top institution of higher learning, is on a mission to improve its research and the means by which the resulting troves of data are archived and made accessible. In 2016, Tsinghua University Library’s total collection reached five million volumes. Although the library is highly competent in organizing large-scale collections, the task of managing the academic outputs produced by THU researchers was presenting problems.

As Dou Tianfang, Associate University Librarian, explains, “It’s very difficult to ask the scholars to archive their academic outputs in the Scholarly Repository. The library needed to figure out a way to identify the academic outputs created by Tsinghua scholars.”

The university collaborated with Clarivate Analytics to automate the creation and maintenance of its Scholars Repository using data sourced from Web of Science. As Dou notes, “Web of Science’s reputation for high quality and broad coverage, combined with their robust tools for integrating bibliographic and citation data, made it the perfect solution for our Scholars Repository, providing researchers from THU and around the world with a more valuable experience.”
