Introduction
All researchers, regardless of ability, need access to scholarly information. ProQuest is committed to providing all our users with a fully accessible experience for research, teaching and learning.
At ProQuest we make every effort to ensure that our platforms – including Books In Print – can be used by everyone. Books In Print is continually designed and developed to meet Level AA of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2).
Users of Books In Print should be able to:
- Navigate most of the website using just a keyboard.
- Go directly to main content areas on the page using skip links.
- Listen to most of the website using a screen reader.
- Navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
- Zoom in up to 400% using browser tools without text spilling off screen.
If you have a disability and need to make your computer, tablet or other device easier to use, AbilityNet is a recommended resource. We also recommend browsing free add-ons offered for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.
There may be some parts of this website that are not fully accessible:
- There are text input fields and checkboxes that are missing form labels.
- There are checkboxes that have multiple form labels.
- There are layout tables that do not have properly labeled headers.
Accessibility features and gaps
Keyboard access
Most of the website can be navigated with a keyboard alone, but there are pages of the site that make navigation take a little more work than usual.
The Browse page has an expanding column feature where you must get through the complete list before being able to scroll through the list of the selected item. When viewing book title details, when you open the print, email, download, delete, or properties modal windows, the focus is at the bottom of the modal window. To navigate this, you could use Shift/Tab to move the focus backwards through the window back to the top.
Color contrast
While most text throughout Books In Print meets minimum color contrast standards, but there are cases where text does not have enough contrast with the background color. Some items have low color contrast, for example the sub nav links in the grey bar at the top of the Title Details pages.
If color contrast is a concern for you, we recommend utilizing one of the free browser plugins that can increase text/background color contrast, such as the High Contrast extension for Google Chrome.
Labels
Throughout Books In Print, form elements and buttons are given accessible labels, so you can use assistive technologies to determine the purpose of various controls. There are many cases of missing labels. In these cases, there are usually adjacent text labels that describe the purpose of the control. The search box is also missing a label. Check boxes on the Search Results and the My Accounts pages are missing labels.
There are also cases where a form element or button has multiple labels. This may cause a screen reader to not read the appropriate label.
Tables
On some pages such as the Login and Usage Statistics pages, HTML layout tables that do not have the proper headers to identify columns and rows are present. This could make navigating with a screen reader difficult.
