Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease – Current Treatment – Current Treatment: Physician Insights – Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (EU5)

The treatment landscape for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has significantly evolved in the past few years. A plethora of COPD treatments are available in the EU5. These include long-acting inhalers such as long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA) / long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA) / inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) fixed-dose combinations (FDCs) (i.e., Trimbow, Trelegy and Trixeo), which are rapidly gaining traction in the COPD market, complementing existing LAMA, LAMA/LABA, and LABA/ICS FDCs. More recently, the approval of biologics such as Dupixent and Nucala has further expanded treatment choices and increased the complexity of physicians’ prescribing decisions. In this report, we offer insight into EU5 pulmonologists’ prescribing patterns, attitudes and perceptions, and current and anticipated use of various products. We also examine the perceived advantages and disadvantages of key market players, all of them essential to anticipate shifts in frontline practice.

Questions answered

  • Which drugs are the patient-share leaders in different lines of therapy? How are the various LABA/LAMA/ICS FDCs and biologics positioned in the COPD treatment algorithm?
  • What are the most influential drivers of treatment selection, and under which scenarios do physicians prescribe Dupixent and Nucala?
  • How long do patients stay on a specific therapy? What factors drive therapy discontinuation and switching?
  • How have pulmonologists’ prescribing behaviors changed in the past year? What changes do they anticipate in the coming year?
