- Pursue economies of scale. What outside services do you procure transactionally that could be consolidated and better negotiated through a single provider? Patent translations are an area where savings of up to 30 to 40 percent could be easily made through a consolidated approach with a single vendor.
- Remove uncertainty about cost and quality. Patent filing costs, of which translations are a major component, have increased dramatically over the years. Filing in several countries incurs higher costs and may require the use of local attorneys. This may lead to loss of control over costs and quality. When in-country law firms bundle the cost of translations with other local filing services, do you know how they translate the texts and the price associated with that activity? Are they using qualified experts supported by quality assurance processes? Using a specialist translation service ensures consistency and control over these variables.
- Simplify the management of the translation process. Filing in several countries may require the use of local attorneys who offer to translate the text. Where an amendment to the original document is required, it increases the complexity of working with several firms. Consider outsourcing to a single service provider to take on this responsibility.
- Respond to variations in your filing strategy. While you may have core jurisdictions and markets in which you seek protection, the most cost-effective way to deal with any changes in filing strategy is to outsource the work to a provider who already understands your requirements and can scale to your needs – at a global level.
- Speed up your office action responses. Avoid any delay in responding to office actions. By instructing your overseas associates to notify you of office actions as soon as they are issued and to pass them to a qualified translation provider, you can give your counsel more time to review the nature of the objection and provide an informed response.
