A new Clarivate report[1] from Derwent™ patent experts Ed White, Gaurav Sawant and Parijat Oak provides an update on 5G standards-essential patent declarations
In a report published in August 2020, Demystifying the 5G standard essential patent landscape, we presented the statistics of patents declared as essential to 5G standards as of June 30, 2020.
In the last nine months, the landscape of 5G declared standard essential patent families has changed due to new declarations, new 5G standards, new patent applications in the patent family and grants of patent applications. To understand these changes, we present updated analysis of 5G declared standard essential patent families as of March 31, 2021 in a new report.
We observed that the total 5G declared families increased by 38% from June 30, 2020, with a total count today at more than 37,300 patent families. The top six companies in number of declared patent families with at least one granted patent are Huawei, Samsung, LG, Qualcomm, Nokia and Ericsson.
