Demystifying the 5G standard essential patent landscape: Phase 3

A new report[1] from Clarivate patent experts provides an update on 5G standards-essential patent declarations.

In our Demystifying the 5G standard essential patent landscape: Phase 2 report published in July 2021, we presented the statistics of patents declared as essential to 5G standards as of March 31, 2021.

We present statistics in a new report that captures new declarations, new 5G standards, new patent applications and new grants within the patent families. For this report, we considered declarations as of December 31, 2021.

Key observations include:

  • Total 5G declared families increased by nearly a quarter from March 31, 2021, with a total count of more than 46,300 patent families as of December 31, 2021.
  • 63% of 5G declared patent families have at least one granted patent.
  • The top six companies in volume of declared 5G patent families with at least one granted patent continue to be Huawei, Samsung, Qualcomm, LG, Nokia and Ericsson.
