Introduction

All researchers, regardless of ability, need access to scholarly information. ProQuest is committed to providing all our users with a fully accessible experience for research, teaching and learning.

At ProQuest, we make every effort to ensure that our platforms – including TDM Studio – can be used by everyone. TDM Studio is continually designed and developed to meet Level AA of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1) and Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act for features and functions.

Accessibility of this site

Users of TDM Studio should be able to:

  • Easy to read text on the page due to high color contrast.
  • Listen to most of the website using a screen reader.
  • Navigate most of the website using speech recognition software

There may be some parts of this website that are not fully accessible:

  • While some areas of the website are keyboard accessible, there are some areas that are difficult or impossible to navigate with a keyboard.
  • In a few cases, there are issues with color contrast and using color to signify a change.
  • Labels are missing for some controls on the refine content pages.
  • Skip links are missing
  • Magnification up to 200% on some pages causes reflow issues and requires bidirectional scroll.

If you have a disability and need to make your computer, tablet or other device easier to use, AbilityNet is a recommended resource. We also recommend browsing free add-ons offered for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

Compliance level and report

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines v2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.
Access the full Accessibility Compliance Report (VPAT 2.5 & WCAG) for TDM Studio.

Accessibility of this platform

TDM Studio is a new solution for text and data mining. With TDM Studio, researchers have the flexibility to use their preferred methods created from open-source programming languages like R and Python – along with methods provided by ProQuest – for analysis and visualization. When you choose to analyze your dataset, you will be redirected to an external platform, Juypter Notebook. While we try to make the experience of creating datasets as accessible as possible, we cannot control the accessibility of your experience on Jupyter Notebook. The Geographic Analysis tool within TDM Studio that accompanies TDM Studio data visualization, allows researchers to view the articles within their created project set over time throughout the world. TDM Studio Data visualization interface supports research at all levels. Users with and without coding experience can use TDM studio solution to identify trends, generate insights and make discoveries.

Keyboard access

Some of the TDM Studio can be navigated with a keyboard alone, but there are several critical areas that are currently inaccessible or hard to access or hard to access:

  • Most keyboard issues are concentrated in Visualization section of UI
  • In the Visualization dashboard under “You Projects” users are unable to interact with any controls to open analysis.
  • User is unable to export any analysis.
  • On the Geographic Analysis Visualization page, once the user selects a cluster the article drawer does not have keyboard/command/tab abilities for user to navigate.

Labels

Throughout TDM Studio, form elements and buttons are given accessible labels, so you can use assistive technologies to determine the purpose of various controls. The majority of elements have labels, but there are a small number of missing labels. In these cases, there are usually adjacent text labels that describe the purpose of the control.

Search fields on select publications and databases are not labeled.

Color contrast

While most text throughout TDM Studio meets minimum color contrast standards, there are cases where text does not have enough contrast with the background color: dataset status text, show/hide details in the datasets table, export page content, and a few others. Please see the conformance report for details.

If color contrast is a concern for you, we recommend utilizing one of the free browser plugins that can increase text/background color contrast, such as the High Contrast extension for Google Chrome.

Magnification

Throughout TDM Studio, you will be able to magnify the website pages using the browser zoom up to 200% without degrading utility or readability. However, there are some cases where zooming causes the pages not to reflow properly and requires bidirectional scroll.

Accessibility testing

The accessibility of TDM Studio is a continual effort at ProQuest. Accessibility standards are built into our design, and style guides and included as part of requirements in our software development and quality assurance pipeline.

TDM Studio code is checked for accessibility using a range of automated and manual checks including but not limited to:

  • Color Contrast Analyzer provided by WebAIM
  • Deque aXe accessibility testing tool
  • High Contrast Chrome extension
  • Keyboard-access manual testing and assessment
  • WAVE (Web Accessibility Evaluation tool) provided by WebAIM
  • NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access) screen-reader with Windows
  • VoiceOver with Mac

TDM Studio is tested on the latest version Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Edge, and on devices including Mac and Windows computers, and Android and iOS devices.
