Introduction

Clarivate is committed to providing all our users with an accessible experience. We make every effort to ensure that our platforms – including Sierra – can be used by everyone. Sierra is continually designed and developed to meet Level AA of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1).

Users of Sierra should be able to:

  • Navigate to most of the application using a screen reader
  • Experience a logical and consistent tab order for majority of the interactive elements
  • The name, role, state, and value of most user interface components can be programmatically determined
  • Customize color settings to enhance visual accessibility and select the most suitable contrast.

There may be some parts of this application that are not fully accessible:

  • Some elements may have missing or unclear labels, making screen reader navigation less clear for buttons or form fields
  • Focus order may be unintuitive which could cause confusion when navigating the application via keyboard only
  • At 200% zoom, some content may be lost or require horizontal scrolling

Accessibility features and gaps

Keyboard and screen reader use and navigation

  • Sierra was designed with keyboard and screen reader access in mind. You should be able to navigate the application fully and complete core tasks using just a keyboard or screen reader.
  • There are a few areas that may cause difficulty for keyboard and screen reader users. In some places of the application, there is an unintuitive focus order which may cause confusion to screen reader or keyboard users in navigating effectively.

Responsiveness to user-configured accessibility settings

  • As a desktop application, Sierra is responsive to accessibility setting changes at the operating system-level, for example changing or enabling alternative color themes like high contrast mode.
  • At increased magnification, some content may be lost or require multi-directional scrolling which could cause increased difficulty in navigating across screens.

How we tested this platform

The accessibility of Sierra is a continual effort at Clarivate. Accessibility standards are built into our design and style guides and included as part of requirements in our software development and quality assurance pipeline.

Sierra code is checked for accessibility using a range of automated and manual checks including but not limited to:

  • Color TPGI’s Color Contrast Analyzer
  • Keyboard-access manual testing and assessment
  • NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access) screen-reader
  • Applicable Standards/Guidelines

Sierra is tested as a Desktop Application on a Windows computer.

The application was last fully audited in 2023. The test was carried out by an external accessibility vendor, Deque. Accessibility testing is part of our ongoing development lifecycle in addition to periodic reviews.
