Japan Privacy Notice
Effective Date: 17 July 2025
- Scope
This supplemental Japan privacy notice (“Japan Privacy Notice”) describes how Clarivate, its affiliates and respective subsidiary companies (collectively, “Clarivate”, “we”, “us” and “our”) collect, use and transfer (collectively, “process”) personal data with respect to the Act on the Protection of Personal Information (“APPI”).
The Japan Privacy Notice applies when Clarivate processes personal data in Japan, and when Clarivate processes personal data of individuals located in Japan regarding the provision of goods or services to a person in Japan.
The terms in the Japan Privacy Notice are set out in addition to and form an integral part of the terms of the Corporate Privacy Notice. In the event of any conflict or inconsistency between the Corporate Privacy Notice and the Japan Privacy Notice, the terms of this Japan Privacy Notice shall govern and prevail.
In the context of the Japan Privacy Notice, personal information means information about a living individual that includes any information that can identify a specific individual such as name, date of birth and address. It includes information that can be easily cross-referenced with other information to identify a specific individual. Numbers, symbols and codes as specified by cabinet orders which can identify a specific individual, are also personal information. They include fingerprint data and passport numbers. Personal data means personal information that is stored in a database, or in a similar form.

- Transferring your personal data to third parties
We will not transfer personal data to third parties without prior consent except in the following circumstances:
- When required by law;
- When necessary to protect human life, physical safety, or property, and obtaining consent is difficult;
- When particularly necessary for the improvement of public health or the sound development of children, and obtaining consent is difficult;
- When it is necessary to cooperate with national or local government agencies or their authorized representatives in performing duties prescribed by law, and obtaining consent would likely hinder the performance of such duties;
- When the third party is an academic research institution, etc., and it is necessary for the third party to process the personal data for academic research purposes (this includes cases where only part of the purpose of processing personal data is for academic research purposes, but excludes cases where there is a risk of unjustly infringing the rights and interests of individuals); and
- Other cases permitted by law.
- Entrusting the processing of personal data
We may entrust the processing of all or part of personal data we collect to a third party. This will be done within the scope necessary to achieve the purpose of use. Clarivate will supervise the entrusted party as necessary and appropriate to ensure that the information is properly managed.

- Understanding your privacy rights
You are entitled to certain rights under the APPI which are listed below.
- Notification of the purpose of use, disclosure of your personal data, and disclosure of records of transfer to third parties. You may request a notification of the purposes of use, disclosure of your personal data, and disclosure of records of transfer to third However, we may decline to disclose such information in any of the following cases:
- If the disclosure is likely to harm human life, body, property or other rights or interests;
- If the disclosure is likely to significantly interfere with the proper execution of our business operations;
- If the disclosure would violate applicable laws or regulations; and
- If your identity cannot be verified.
- Correction, addition, or deletion of personal data. You may request us to correct, add, or delete your personal data which we hold. Upon receiving such a request, we will, without delay and to the extent necessary to achieve the purpose of use, conduct an investigation and, based on the results, correct, add, or delete the relevant personal data within the scope permitted under the APPI.
- Suspension of use or suspension of transfer to third parties. You may request the suspension of use or suspension of transfer of your personal data to third In such cases, we will respond appropriately in accordance with the APPI.

Upon receiving a request from you, we will first verify your identity by matching the information you provide (including your name, email address, and phone number) with what we have on file for you. We may ask you for additional information to verify your identity or to comply with your request.
We do not charge a fee to process or respond to your verifiable consumer request unless it is excessive, repetitive, or manifestly unfounded. If we determine that the request warrants a fee, we will tell you why we made that decision and provide you with a cost estimate before completing your request.
- How we process non-personal data
Clarivate may anonymise, aggregate, or de-identify personal data and process the resulting non-personal anonymised, aggregated, statistical or de-identified data (“non-personal data”) through AI systems and/or Generative AI systems. Non-personal data (e.g., anonymised statistical information, demographic information, aggregated and/or de-identified data) may be derived from your personal data but is not considered personal data in law as it does not, directly or indirectly, reveal your identity. We may use such non-personal data to analyse the effectiveness of our products and/or services, improve and add features, conduct research, and for similar purposes. We will not attempt to re-identify aggregated or de-identified data. For the avoidance of doubt, applicable data-protection laws, the Corporate Privacy Notice, and the Japan Privacy Notice continue to apply to all forms and categories of Personal Data.
- How you will know if we make changes to this Japan Privacy Notice
As with the Corporate Privacy Notice, we may update the Japan Privacy Notice from time to time. Any changes will be effective when we post the revised Japan Privacy Notice. The Japan Privacy Notice was last updated as of the effective date listed above. Minor changes to the Japan Privacy Notice may occur that will not significantly affect our use of personal data without notice or consent. We encourage you to periodically review this page for the latest information on our privacy practices.
