Ulcerative Colitis – Current Treatment – Current Treatment: Physician Insights – Ulcerative Colitis (EU5)

Many well-established therapies are available to treat ulcerative colitis (UC) in the EU5. TNF-alpha (J&J Innovative Medicine’s Remicade and AbbVie’s Humira), a CAM inhibitor (Takeda’s Entyvio), and an IL-12/23 inhibitor (J&J Innovative Medicine’s Stelara) are the most widely used biologics for moderate to severe UC and are entrenched as first-line biologics, followed by oral targeted therapies such as JAK inhibitors (Pfizer’s Xeljanz, Alfasigma’s Jyseleca, and AbbVie’s Rinvoq). In addition, several new therapies, including IL-23 inhibitors (Eli Lilly’s Omvoh, AbbVie’s Skyrizi, and J&J Innovative Medicine’s Tremfya), S1P-R modulators (BMS’s Zeposia and Pfizer’s Velsipity), and biosimilars of infliximab, adalimumab, and ustekinumab, have been approved for UC in Europe in the past few years. The availability of agents from different drug classes and the launch of biosimilars will not only expand treatment options but also influence physicians’ prescribing behavior and thus the treatment landscape.

Questions Answered:

  • Which drug classes are the patient-share leaders in each line of therapy? How are the various biological agents positioned in surveyed physicians’ UC treatment algorithm?
  • What are the most influential drivers of treatment selection, and under which scenarios do/will physicians prescribe Velsipity and Rinvoq?
  • What are the common treatment scenarios before initiating each targeted therapy (i.e., Remicade, Humira, Simponi, Stelara, Entyvio, Omvoh, Skyrizi, Tremfya, Rinvoq, Xeljanz, Jyseleca, Zeposia, Velsipity, biosimilar infliximab, biosimilar adalimumab, and biosimilar ustekinumab)?
  • What factors drive therapy discontinuation and switching? What factors have/will drive recent/anticipated prescribing changes?

Geography: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and United Kingdom

Primary research: 250 gastroenterologists completed the survey. Of these physicians, 50 were in France, 50 in Germany, 50 in Italy, 50 in Spain, and 50 in the United Kingdom. The survey was fielded in March 2026.

Key companies: Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, AbbVie, Takeda, Eli Lilly, Pfizer, others

Key drugs: Humira, Remicade, Entyvio, Stelara, Omvoh, Skyrizi, Tremfya, Xeljanz, Rinvoq, Zeposia, and Velsipity

Product Description: Through survey data from EU5 physicians, Current Treatment: Physician Insights offers in-depth analyses of the reasons behind treatment dynamics, prescribing behavior, and brand preference, enabling you to:

  • Understand the treatment landscape for a disease and how physicians make prescribing decisions.
  • Evaluate the drivers and obstacles that influence treatment selection.
  • Analyze your brand’s performance from the physician perspective to enhance or defend your competitive position.
  • Create impactful messaging for physicians by identifying brand differentiators and understanding what motivates prescribing behaviors.
