Ischemic Stroke – Current Treatment – Current Treatment: Physician Insights – Acute Ischemic Stroke (US)

Ischemic stroke (IS) is a leading cause of death and neurological disability worldwide. Recombinant tissue plasminogen activator formulations—alteplase (Genentech’s Activase, other brands) and tenecteplase (Genentech’s TNKase)—are the only pharmacological therapies approved for the acute treatment of IS owing to the persistent failure of investigational compounds over the past two decades. However, because of strict initiation criteria and safety risks, only a small fraction of diagnosed IS events receive pharmacotherapies. Thus, a high level of unmet clinical need remains for treatments that can prevent permanent neurological damage and restore function in post-stroke survivors living with residual impairment. This report provides data and insight on the treatment of IS in the United States, including the drivers of and obstacles to the use of key therapies.

Questions answered

  • What percentage of IS patients arrive at the hospital within key time windows for acute drug and/or device intervention? What percentage of IS patients receive these interventions?
  • How do IS patients differ with regard to functional outcomes after a stroke? Which scales are used to measure these outcomes?
  • What post-stroke therapies do IS patients receive? What specialties are involved in their long-term care?
  • What is the near-term outlook for the uptake of Roche / Genentech’s TNKase in IS? What factors will influence its use?

Markets covered: United States

Primary research: Survey of 100 U.S.-based specialists, including 70 neurologists and 30 neurosurgeons/interventional radiologists

Key therapies covered: Tenecteplase (TNKase), alteplase (Activase), stroke sequelae drugs, neuroprotective agents, secondary prevention drugs, and mechanical endovascular thrombectomy devices
