Hyperkalemia – Current Treatment – Treatment Algorithms: Claims Data Analysis – Hyperkalemia (US)

Hyperkalemia is defined as a serum potassium level above 5.0 mEq/L. This report covers the management of chronic hyperkalemia through diuretic therapy, correcting metabolic acidosis when present, and using potassium binders for longterm potassium control. Use of traditional potassium binder agent sodium polystyrene sulfonate is limited due to gastrointestinal side effects. Other potassium binders such as patiromer (Veltassa) and sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (Lokelma) play a central role due to their ability to lower and maintain serum potassium while allowing continued RAAS inhibitor use. In this report, we delve into the key therapeutic approaches and their application in treating newly diagnosed and recently treated chronic hyperkalemia patients.

Questions answered

  • What patient shares do key therapies and brands garner by line of therapy in newly diagnosed chronic hyperkalemia patients? What are the quarterly trends in prescribing among recently treated and newly diagnosed chronic hyperkalemia patients?
  • How have potassium binders, diuretics, etc. been integrated into the treatment algorithm, and what is its source of business?
  • What percentage of chronic hyperkalemia patients receive drug therapy within one year of diagnosis, and how quickly? What percentage of patients progress to later lines of therapy within one year of diagnosis?
  • What percentage of chronic hyperkalemia patients are treated with monotherapy vs. combination therapy? What are the most commonly used combinations?
  • What are the product-level compliance and persistency rates among drug-treated patients?
