Vitiligo – Current Treatment – Treatment Algorithms: Claims Data Analysis – Vitiligo (US)
Vitiligo is a chronic skin depigmentation disorder characterized by the destruction or functional loss of melanocytes. Given its visible manifestations, the disease is associated with a substantial patient burden. Until recently, no therapies were specifically approved for vitiligo; management relied primarily on topical corticosteroids or other immunomodulators, used alone or in combination with narrow-band UVB to induce repigmentation. However, these approaches often provide only modest and variable clinical benefits and may be associated with treatment-related adverse effects. In July 2022, the FDA approved Incyte’s Opzelura (topical ruxolitinib) as the first pharmacologic treatment indicated for repigmentation in adult and pediatric patients aged 12 years and older with nonsegmental vitiligo. Our Treatment Algorithms study leverages national patient-level claims data to explore the use of key therapies in both newly diagnosed and recently treated patients, providing insight into the current treatment landscape for vitiligo.
