Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is an orphan disease affecting approximately 50,000 people in the United States. Characterized by the thickening and stiffening of tissues in the lungs, it usually occurs in people aged 50 or older and is associated with a poor prognosis (survival of three to five years after diagnosis in most cases).
