Peripheral Arterial Disease – Current Treatment – Treatment Algorithms: Claims Data Analysis – Peripheral Artery Disease (US)

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a subtype of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease affecting the arteries of the lower extremities and is associated with reduced walking capacity, claudication (pain, cramping, leg fatigue), and elevated risk of cardiovascular (CV) events and limb complications, including amputation. This report focuses on PAD pharmacotherapy, which is intended to reduce the risk of CV and limb events, manage symptoms, and improve functional status. The PAD treatment landscape is mature and largely dominated by generic therapies. Key drugs include antiplatelets, lipid-lowering, antihypertensives, and vasoactive therapies. In this report, we use patient-level claims data to analyze prescribing dynamics in the U.S. PAD market and provide insights into the factors shaping treatment patterns among newly diagnosed and recently treated patients.

Questions answered

  • What patient shares do key therapies and brands garner by line of therapy in newly diagnosed PAD patients?
  • What are the quarterly trends in prescribing among recently treated and newly diagnosed PAD patients?
  • How has low-dose rivaroxaban been integrated into the treatment algorithm, and what is its source of business?
  • What percentage of PAD patients receive drug therapy within one year of diagnosis, and how quickly? What percentage of patients progress to later lines of therapy within one year of diagnosis?
  • What percentage of PAD patients are treated with monotherapy vs. combination therapy? What are the most commonly used combinations?
  • What are the product-level compliance and persistency rates among drug-treated patients?
