Migraine – Current Treatment – Treatment Algorithms: Claims Data Analysis – Migraine Prophylaxis (US)
Migraine is a common neurological condition characterized by moderate to severe headaches; it can have a major impact on patients’ quality of life. Our quantitative analysis of treatment patterns focuses on the prophylactic treatment of migraine, aimed at reducing the frequency, severity, and duration of migraine attacks and, in turn, reducing patients’ level of disability and potentially increasing the responsiveness of breakthrough migraine attacks to acute treatment. Although generic AEDs, antidepressants, and beta blockers dominate the first three lines of therapy, our report provides insight into both the market-leading classes and the uptake of brands, such as CGRP monoclonal antibodies and the CGRP-targeted oral therapy Qulipta (AbbVie). Pfizer’s Nurtec ODT is not included in our primary analysis, as its acute and prophylactic use cannot be readily differentiated.
Questions answered
- What patient shares do key therapies and brands garner by line of therapy in prophylaxisnaïve migraine patients? What are the quarterly trends in prescribing among naïve and recently treated patients?
- How have CGRP-targeted therapies been integrated into the prophylactic treatment algorithm, and what is their source of business? What switching patterns exist between different MAbs and between MAbs and Qulipta?
- What percentage of prophylactically naive migraine patients receive drug therapy within two years of diagnosis, and how quickly? What percentage of patients progress to later lines of prophylactic therapy within two years of diagnosis?
- What is the split between prophylactic monotherapy and combination therapy in drugtreated migraine patients—including the most common combinations—and the productlevel compliance and persistency rates for each therapy?
