Florida | Summer | 2010 | Health Plan Analysis

Job losses continued to drag down Florida’s commercial insurance market in 2010, with the self-insured rolls taking the largest hit, likely reflecting layoffs and attrition in the state’s biggest self-funding employers. Most carriers were affected, but a few like AvMed Health Plans managed to produce gains through competitively priced products. The industry is awaiting the effects of health reform, particularly rules around minimum medical loss ratios for the individual books of business. Elsewhere, Medicare Advantage enrollment has surged over the past year despite a reduction in federal reimbursements to plans. This improvement points to health plans’ ability to market their products to seniors who will gain extra drug benefits for joining an MA plan even at the expense of a restricted network.
