Delayed Sleep-Wake Phase Disorder | Executive Insights | US/EU5 | 2021

  • DSWPD is a type of circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorder in which the sleep-wake cycle is delayed. DSWPD occurs more commonly in adolescents than in adults. In addition, the condition is highly comorbid with some psychiatric conditions, such as MDD and ASD.
  • Although interviewed sleep specialists commonly diagnose DSWPD, they cite challenges in differentiating circadian DSWPD from noncircadian (i.e., behavioral) DSWPD. Interviewed psychiatrists usually consider DSWPD as secondary to a psychiatric disorder.
  • No drug is currently approved for the management of DSWPD in the United States and EU5. Melatonin and some nonpharmacological approaches (e.g., light therapy) are commonly utilized in the treatment of DSWPD. However, the patient journey may differ depending on the presence or absence of a comorbid psychiatric disorder.
  • Interviewed physicians cite multiple areas of unmet need in DSWPD, so opportunities exist for drug development in DSWPD. Of note, interviewed physicians have high expectations for an emerging drug in DSWPD.
