BioWorld: celebrating recognition, reaffirming our mission

BioWorld: celebrating recognition, reaffirming our mission

Awards are an honor, but they are not why we do what we do. That’s why this year’s recognition from the APEX Awards is especially meaningful.

BioWorld earned seven 2026 APEX Awards for Publication Excellence, including three Grand Awards and four Awards of Excellence. Judged by publishing industry peers, these honors recognize excellence across reporting, writing, visual storytelling and editorial collaboration. While we are proud of this recognition, what makes it especially rewarding is that it reflects the work our team does every day to serve the global life sciences community.

Those awards are a reflection of something much bigger.

Every day, the life sciences industry generates more than headlines. Scientific breakthroughs, regulatory decisions, investment activity and policy developments all shape the future of healthcare, often simultaneously. For those working across biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical technology, understanding how these forces intersect has never been more important.

That has been BioWorld’s mission for more than 35 years.

Since our founding in 1990, BioWorld has chronicled the breakthroughs, setbacks, partnerships, investments and policy decisions that have shaped the global life sciences industry. While the industry has evolved dramatically over the past three and a half decades, our commitment to trusted journalism has remained unchanged. Throughout decades of scientific advancement and market evolution, our purpose has remained constant: to deliver trusted journalism and expert analysis that help our readers understand not only what is happening, but why it matters.

This past year underscored the importance of that mission.

As scientific advances accelerated alongside significant shifts in public policy, regulation and funding, our newsroom delivered timely reporting and thoughtful analysis that helped readers navigate an increasingly complex environment, connecting developments across science, business and policy to provide the context our subscribers depend on to make informed decisions.

That work is only possible because of the remarkable people behind BioWorld.

Our journalists bring decades of experience covering the science, business and policy that drive innovation. They understand not only the complexities of drug development, medical technology and global markets, but also the real-world implications these developments have for companies, investors, researchers and ultimately patients. Behind every story is a collaborative effort among reporters, editors and production teams who share an unwavering commitment to accuracy, independence and excellence.

Together, this year’s honors recognize the breadth of expertise across our newsroom, from daily reporting and enterprise journalism to financial analysis and visual storytelling.

This year’s honors include:

Grand Award | Writing a Single Edition of a Newsletter

Awarded for the April 3, 2025 edition of BioWorld, recognizing the publication’s daily delivery of comprehensive life sciences news and analysis. The award honors the collaborative efforts of Jennifer Boggs, Annette Boyle, Anette Breindl, Karen Carey, Marian (YoonJee) Chu, Ann Marie Griffith, Lee Landenberger, Harini Mathavan, Nuala Moran, Randy Osborne, Tamra Sami and Mari Serebrov.

  • Judges’ comments: “This Grand Award-winning entry stood out among others in the category because of the importance of its main topic (the effect of tariffs on biopharmaceutical-related industry) and its effect on millions of Americans, with three main articles addressing that topic. Beyond those, the issue combines important content regarding what the editors call the ‘wholesale assault on research,’ and several advancements in the creation of new drugs for dry eye disease, kidney disease, and obesity. There is a ton of useful information in one tightly edited and valuable newsletter.”

Grand Award | Current Events & Trending Topics: Domestic Policy & Issues

Awarded for In 2025, science’s biggest story was political by Anette Breindl. The article examines the far-reaching effects of political change on the U.S. scientific ecosystem and biomedical research.

  • Judges’ comments: “This is an incredibly relevant, serious article addressing the changes taking place – characterized as ‘the politicized destruction of U.S. science …’ in biomedical science. The central topics of illegal mass firings … withholding of already allocated grant money … and the removal of scientific information that does not align with political ideology are all addressed with amazing clarity and thoroughness. The judges were aghast at the conclusion that this approach is dismantling a scientific ecosystem that has been the envy of the world…. since the 1930s. The article leads one to hope that more logical intelligent minds will intervene.”

Grand Award | Design & Illustration: Infographics

Awarded for Ann Marie Griffith’s infographic accompanying So far, ACIP vaccine recommendations in line with the world. The interactive visual presents a global view of vaccine recommendations, making complex policy information accessible and engaging for readers.

  • Judges’ comments: “This is a very innovative, unique and informative infographic that reports on the current status of the COVID vaccine and the recommendations for its implementation worldwide. The highlight is a fabulous display of 10 ‘vials’ with the flags of each country appearing on the vial. Click on the vial, and you will see the current policies of each country regarding usage of the COVID vaccine. As an added feature, the piece reports on the MMR/MMRV vaccine debate and the Hepatitis B vaccine. Just a great infographic!”

Award of Excellence | Current Events & Trending Topics: Domestic Policy & Issues

Awarded for Filling the NIH funding gap to protect biopharma research by Karen Carey. The article examines the consequences of shifting federal funding priorities and the strategies emerging to sustain biomedical research and innovation.

Award of Excellence | Writing: Investments, Financials and Crypto

Award of Excellence | Writing: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Awarded for FDA diversity in trials rules evaporate after “strident” Trump executive order by Randy Osborne. The article examines the policy shifts affecting diversity in clinical trials and the potential implications for drug development and patient representation.
