Ulcerative Colitis | Treatment Algorithms: Claims Data Analysis | Pediatric | US | 2023

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic intermittent relapsing disorder of the large intestine and rectum. Treatment typically begins with conventional agents (e.g., 5-aminosalicylic acids [5-ASAs]) that are often effective for those patients with mild to moderate disease. Treatment then progresses to more-potent drugs, such as immunosuppressants and/or biologics, as needed. Among the biologics, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha inhibitors (Janssen’s Remicade and AbbVie’s Humira) and a cell adhesion molecule (CAM) inhibitor (Takeda’s Entyvio) are the mainstays of treatment, followed by an IL-12/23 inhibitor (Janssen’s Stelara). However, oral targeted therapies, such as Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors (Pfizer’s Xeljanz / Xeljanz XR and AbbVie’s Rinvoq) and a sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor (S1P-R) modulator (BMS’s Zeposia), are increasing the market competition among later-line targeted therapies. The impending entry of adalimumab biosimilars in the United States will further impact market dynamics.

Questions answered

  • What patient shares do key therapies and brands garner by line of therapy in newly diagnosed pediatric UC patients? What are the quarterly trends in prescribing among recently treated and newly diagnosed pediatric UC patients?
  • How have Rinvoq and Zeposia been integrated into the treatment algorithm, and what are their source of business?
  • What percentage of pediatric UC patients receive drug therapy within 365 days of diagnosis, and how quickly? What percentage of patients progress to later lines of therapy within 365 days of diagnosis?
  • What percentage of pediatric UC patients are treated with monotherapy vs. combination therapy? What are the most commonly used combinations?
  • What are the product-level compliance and persistency rates among drug-treated patients?
