Crohn’s disease (CD) is a chronic debilitating illness with limited effective treatment options, especially for patients with moderate to severe disease. Treatment options for CD include conventional, largely generic small molecules and more-potent biologics. Despite the clinical and commercial success of the tumor-necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) inhibitors, opportunity remains for agents that can safely and effectively induce and maintain remission in greater numbers of patients with moderate to severe CD. Indeed, the cell adhesion molecule (CAM) inhibitor vedolizumab (Takeda’s Entyvio) is an option for adult patients with moderate to severe CD who have failed conventional therapies and/or TNF-α inhibitors.
