Renal Anemia – Current Treatment – Treatment Algorithms: Claims Data Analysis – Renal Anemia (US)

Renal anemia is a common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD). When kidneys are diseased or impaired, they fail to generate enough EPO, causing renal anemia. The primary goal of renal anemia treatment is to increase and maintain Hb levels and reduce the risk of complications of chronic hypoxia, mortality, and cardiovascular disease. The severity of CKD and Hb levels dictate the choice of renal anemia therapy. Renal anemia nondialysis patients are initially treated with oral iron, followed by IV iron; ESAs are prescribed as third-line therapy. Dialysis patients usually receive IV iron therapy and ESAs, with HIF-PH inhibitors prescribed as third-line therapy, primarily for ESA-resistant patients. Several ESAs and iron supplements are available, with varying degrees of commercial success. This report provides important insights into how these agents are used in the management of renal anemia and how practices are evolving.
