A new Clarivate report [1] explores Standard Essential Patents Landscape of 5G RedCap
The RedCap (Reduced Capability) feature was introduced by 3GPP in Release-17 to cater to the growing demand for 5G New Radio (NR) devices with reduced complexity. 5G RedCap, also known as NR-Light, addresses the need for simpler, energy efficient and cost effective 5G NR devices. It supports various use cases like industrial sensors, smart grids, surveillance, and wearables. RedCap plays a crucial role in 5G growth, especially in industrial settings and IoT solutions. It also bridges the gap between low complexity and high performance, offering moderate data rates, extended battery life, and reduced complexity and cost. Enhancements in Release-18 focus on power saving and cost reduction for emerging applications in smart cities and eHealth.
Considering the importance of RedCap NR devices in 5G applications, Clarivate prepared a new report to give an overview of patent landscape of RedCap technology from the view of Standard Essential Patents (SEPs).
Understanding the patent landscape
In this report, we evaluate core 5G patent families identified in the previously published report Demystifying the 5G standard essential patent landscape with manual SEP to determine their potential relation to the RedCap technology.
We explore two approaches to analyse the distribution of core 5G patent families related to 5G RedCap.
- Generic RedCap technologies
Nearly three-fourths of all core 5G patents are related to Generic RedCap technologies, with approximately 70% of these patents originating between 2015 and 2019. The leading six companies—Huawei, Samsung, Qualcomm, LG, Nokia and Ericsson —own nearly 64% of these patent families. Around 67% of the total Generic RedCap patent families owned by these companies have coverage in the United States, Europe, and Mainland China.
- Generic Redcap UE core patent families
Similarly, our analysis of Generic RedCap UE core patent families shows a significant concentration among the same six companies having coverage in the United States, Europe, and Mainland China.
