Diabetic Macular Edema / Diabetic Retinopathy – Current Treatment – Treatment Algorithms: Claims Data Analysis – Diabetic Macular Edema (US)

Diabetic macular edema (DME), a complication of diabetic retinopathy caused by persistently high blood sugar levels, can lead to vision loss if untreated. VEGF inhibitors such as Eylea, Lucentis, and off-label Avastin have traditionally been the first-line treatments, while the corticosteroid implants Ozurdex and Iluvien are generally reserved for later stages of therapy. Novartis’s Beovu has seen limited adoption in DME management, largely due to safety concerns. The treatment landscape expanded with the launch of Roche’s Vabysmo in 2022 and Regeneron’s Eylea HD in 2023, both addressing the need for longer dosing intervals. Competition further increased with the market entry of Lucentis biosimilars, offering similar efficacy at a significantly lower price to the brand.
