EndNote Fusion is here: A new chapter for reference management

EndNote Fusion is now available, combining trusted reference management capabilities with new cloud-based research tools designed to help researchers organize references, collaborate more effectively, and manage research projects more easily.

Research depends on a strong foundation. Every literature review, manuscript, grant proposal, and published article relies on researchers being able to find, organize, and confidently cite the evidence behind their work.

For decades, researchers and institutions have trusted Clarivate reference management solutions to support that foundation. Today, we’re taking the next step forward.

EndNote Fusion is now available, bringing together the trusted reference management capabilities that EndNote and RefWorks customers depend on in a modern cloud experience. It’s designed to help researchers organize information, collaborate with peers, and produce high-quality work more efficiently.

The launch represents an important milestone in our long-term vision for reference management. Institutions that previously used RefWorks have successfully transitioned to EndNote Fusion, with reference libraries, institutional settings, and existing workflows preserved. Researchers and administrators can continue working with confidence today while gaining access to a platform designed for future innovation.

For current EndNote customers, no action is required. EndNote Desktop and EndNote Online remain available, supported, and unchanged. Researchers can continue with their current workflows while we continue to invest in both desktop and cloud-based experiences. We plan to communicate future transitions well in advance, with sufficient time and guidance to ensure a smooth experience.

A unified cloud experience for research workflows

Reference management does far more than save time. It helps researchers stay organized, work more confidently, and maintain the quality and consistency expected of scholarly work.

EndNote Fusion is designed to support research projects from initial literature discovery through manuscript preparation and publication. Researchers can capture and organize sources, work with full text, collaborate with colleagues, and cite accurately while writing. References are enriched with authoritative metadata and supported by citation styles maintained by experts, helping researchers focus less on managing information and more on advancing their work.

EndNote Fusion is also built to support librarians and information professionals responsible for delivering reference management services at scale. With capabilities including SSO, link resolver integration, institutional and custom citation styles, usage analytics, user management, feature controls, and dedicated training and support, institutions can provide a trusted service that is  designed to simplify deployment, support, and adoption across their research communities.

New capabilities for managing and understanding research

With this launch, EndNote Fusion introduces additional capabilities within the cloud experience that address common challenges researchers encounter throughout the research process:

  • Find Full Text in bulk allows users to select up to 250 references and automatically search for available full-text PDFs from trusted sources such as PubMed Central, Unpaywall, Crossref, and DOI.org. This can significantly reduce the time spent manually locating articles and managing PDFs.
  • EndNote Fusion Research Assistant enhances the PDF reading experience with AI-powered support. Researchers can generate document summaries, ask questions about a paper in natural language, and translate PDF content directly within the application. The feature uses a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) approach, meaning responses are based only on the document being analyzed.
  • Find a Journal helps authors identify appropriate publication venues by recommending journals based on a manuscript’s title and abstract. Powered by Web of Science Core Collection, it enables researchers to explore potential journals directly within their writing workflow.
  • A new browser extension makes it easier to save references, PDFs, and web content directly from the browser into an EndNote Fusion library. Where full text is available, the extension can automatically attach PDFs and preserve webpage content for later reference.

Supporting the next generation of research workflows

Research is becoming more collaborative, more data-intensive, and more complex. Researchers need reference management tools that also support the broader work of understanding literature, developing ideas, collaborating with colleagues, and preparing research for publication. EndNote Fusion is an important step toward that future.

As outlined in our vision for the future of reference management, we are continuing to invest in experiences that help researchers move through the research lifecycle with less friction and greater confidence. Our vision for EndNote Fusion includes bringing more ways of working into a single solution, including desktop workflows.

We’re proud to introduce EndNote Fusion to researchers and institutions around the world. This launch is part of our ongoing commitment to helping researchers navigate growing complexity with tools they can trust. As EndNote Fusion evolves, we will continue building on the trusted foundation researchers depend on while delivering new capabilities that help them organize information, understand evidence, and move research forward with confidence.
