Announcing the global launch of Web of Science Research Intelligence: An AI-powered research intelligence platform for funding, strategy, and impact

Web of Science Research Intelligence unites trusted data and analytics-grade AI grounded in responsible AI principles to help research offices, library teams, and researchers secure funding, build stronger collaborations, and demonstrate impact with confidence.

Research institutions are under increasing pressure to secure competitive funding, build high-impact teams, and demonstrate the real-world value of their work. Yet the data and tools needed to support these decisions are often fragmented, inconsistent, and difficult to trust.

At the same time, the rise of general-purpose AI tools has created new possibilities, along with new risks. Insights can be generated quickly, but they are not always reliable, explainable, or grounded in authoritative data. What institutions need is not just faster answers, but better, decision-ready insights.

That is why we developed Web of Science Research Intelligence, now launching globally. It unifies trusted, curated data with analytics-grade AI in a single, AI-native platform that supports both strategic planning and day-to-day workflows for research offices, library teams, and researchers.

Built in partnership with the research community

Web of Science Research Intelligence has been shaped through close collaboration with the research community, helping ensure alignment with real-world institutional workflows and faster adoption among teams. A global network of more than 50 early adopters and development partners across more than 20 countries plays a central role in defining and refining the platform.

Through real-world use cases, these partners have reinforced the need to go beyond surface-level insights. Their input has helped us improve transparency in AI-driven outputs, better support narrative-based reporting, and ensure the platform fits seamlessly into how institutions plan, evaluate, and manage research.

“The value of partnering with Clarivate for University of Colorado Boulder was the opportunity to bring real institutional use cases and workflows into the development process. We were not simply reacting to a finished product — we were helping shape a research intelligence platform around the needs universities have now and the strategic questions we know are coming next.”

Research office staff have helped shape strategic use cases, library teams have informed analytics and reporting needs, and researchers have guided how topics, funding, and collaboration are explored. Together, this work reflects a broader shift: research intelligence is no longer just about reporting on available data. It’s about connecting and transforming data into clear, actionable insight to support real decisions across funding, strategy, and impact.

From fragmented data to analytics-grade insight

Web of Science Research Intelligence connects curated, publisher-neutral data across the research lifecycle, spanning publications, patents, funding, policy documents, clinical trials, and more. This creates a unified and reliable foundation for institutional decision-making.

Built on Web of Science data, long recognized as the global standard for bibliometric analysis, the platform delivers the quality, consistency, and traceability required for high-stakes decisions, extending insights from funding and research strategy to societal impact. It unifies data from Web of Science Core Collection, Derwent Innovations Index, Cortellis Clinical Trials Intelligence, and Pivot-RP into a single source of truth.

Within this foundation, analytics-grade AI workflows transform complex questions into structured analyses and actionable insights, making advanced analytics accessible beyond specialist teams. Beyond creating efficiencies for research managers and librarians in their own work, this also enables researchers to quickly and confidently find funding opportunities and collaborators on their own. Diverse teams across the institution can directly engage with research intelligence and act on insights more quickly at scale.

Unlike general-purpose AI tools that rely on broad, unverified sources, Web of Science Research Intelligence grounds every output in curated, authoritative data, with transparency into how responses are created. The Research Intelligence Assistant is purpose-built for a defined set of common research management tasks. It uses computed indicators and standardized methodologies to deliver structured analyses that allow users to drill down into underlying data. This responsible approach to Academic AI ensures results are explainable, traceable, and reliable, providing a trustworthy foundation for high-stakes institutional decisions.

What you can do today

With Web of Science Research Intelligence, institutions move from fragmented workflows and retrospective reporting to coordinated, insight driven decision making across the research lifecycle.

With unified data and analytics‑grade AI, users can:

  • Discover and track funding opportunities aligned to institutional and researcher priorities
  • Identify experts and build stronger, more strategic collaboration networks
  • Explore emerging research areas and connect them to funding, expertise, and impact
  • Create and share transparent, organization‑level reporting on research performance
  • Analyze and communicate the societal impact of research using multidimensional indicators and clear narratives

Together, these capabilities help institutions move more quickly from question to insight to action — supporting informed, confident, and defensible decisions. Research offices gain clearer visibility to guide strategy, library teams can scale trusted analytics across the organization, and researchers are better equipped to explore, position, and advance their work.

Web of Science Research Intelligence has “become an integral part of how we track and communicate our institution’s research performance. I truly value the partnership with Clarivate and the responsiveness of their team throughout our Early Adopter experience.”

What’s coming next

Web of Science Research Intelligence is designed to evolve alongside the needs of the research community.

Upcoming enhancements will further expand how analytics-grade AI supports institutional strategy and research workflows. Planned capabilities include deeper AI-guided analysis and recommendations, automated report generation, team modeling to support strategic planning, and more granular visibility into impact at the department and researcher level.

Institutions will be able to build more flexible reports, integrate research intelligence into their existing systems, and track the evolution of emerging research areas over time.

As additional data sources are incorporated, including medical guidelines, dissertations, and institution-supplied data, the platform will further expand its ability to support comprehensive, decision-ready insight.

Supporting a new approach to research intelligence

Research intelligence is at an inflection point. As funding becomes more competitive and expectations for accountability and impact rise, institutions can no longer rely on fragmented data, static reporting, or opaque AI outputs. Insight must be trusted, explainable, and ready to inform real decisions.

Web of Science Research Intelligence sets the direction for this shift. By uniting curated, publisher neutral data with analytics grade AI in a single, connected platform, it moves research intelligence from retrospective reporting to forward looking guidance — supporting funding strategy, collaboration planning, and impact evaluation in real time.

For researchers, research offices, and library teams alike, the advantage is not just better answers, but greater confidence in acting on them. With Web of Science Research Intelligence, institutions are equipped to make smarter decisions, compete more effectively, and shape what comes next in research.
