For a patent owner seeking to enforce one— or many— patents, understanding the web of jurisdictions available to them can be difficult. While all jurisdictions offer a variety of opportunities and advantages, none is ideal. In order to make a strong strategic decision, it is imperative that patent owners understand the balance between risks and benefits for each jurisdiction.
The development of a new service or product leaves a tell-tale trail in international IP registries for others to track—from the traditional ramp in patent protection in underlying technology, to the registration of word marks and logos, to the Internet domain set up of brands.
In this session, we discuss the changing nature of gaming, the extension of traditional patent analysis for technology intelligence into other IP asset types, such as trademarks and domains, and the profiling of companies and their development pathways.
Organisations increasingly want to identify and understand both the anticipated and unexpected changes so that they can be better prepared for the future and see new opportunities early.
Watch this webinar to find out how Derwent’s search analysts can monitor and assess these changes to help prepare you for issues associated with a product or technology. Our results can help you gain a better understanding of what’s happening in a specific IP space enabling strategy decisions and confidence within a business.
Annual spend on IP litigation is on the rise. In 2019 alone there were approximately 216K IP related disputes resulting in about US $2 Billion awarded in damages. Faced with these potential extra costs, does it not make sense to consider IP litigation cases as a data point when conducting Freedom-to-Operate (FTO) searchers ?
Derwent’s search analysts assess the risk of patent infringement associated with a product or technology. Our results help you gain a better understanding of your patent rights, determine if you have the freedom to operate in a technology area and avoid potential risk of infringement.
Is it now time to reassess the way you or your agents perform FTO Searches.

In just a few short months, COVID-19 swept through the world. In a recent study* conducted by Derwent, almost half of senior decision makers (49%) said COVID-19 has disrupted their innovation strategy.
Organizations have experienced disruption to their innovation strategy and activity, and patent research but their commitment to innovation is unwavering. Close to a quarter (23%) of 247 companies surveyed noted more of their innovations being re-purposed in markets beyond their primary industry. In such times, companies are opting to save costs by discontinuing renewals for patents which are weak or not in line with their core business. At the same time, companies are also focussed on identifying patents which are valuable for either selling or out-licensing.
In this webinar, we will cover the following topics:
– Strategic patent analysis: Outline process to identify patents that are important for core business
– Patent monetisation: Understand best practice to identify patents that are a good potential for selling or licensing-out
– Identifying potential partners: How to identify potential partners or licensees
– Case studies: Understand how Derwent is helping organizations globally in their patent evaluation process
– Interview: A special interview with the team at Zacco, one of Europe’s largest Intellectual Property protection firms, for insights on patent evaluation and cost management

As we all try to adapt to a “new normal”, many of the more innovative organizations are turning to patent analysis to help prepare for the future. However, one of the pitfalls of such analysis is that measuring patent volumes only tells half the story. Whether you are looking at a competitor or even your own portfolio, not all ideas in a technical field carry the same weight. Some are highly impactful; some are interesting but speculative; some are core to your strategy; others are key to a competitor’s business.
In this webinar, we discussed the approaches, data points and use cases for incorporating patent ‘meta-metrics’ in your work.

As the coronavirus pandemic spreads across the globe, putting unprecedented pressure on social, health, and economic systems, scientists have worked arduously to create vaccine candidates in record time. When it comes to understanding such diseases and bringing treatments to fruition, improving sequence searching capabilities has helped reduce development time for a vaccine. For example, the combination of unique CDR sequences that allow an antibody to specifically recognize Covid-19 is critical in the development of diagnostic testing and vaccine research.
At the beginning of 2020, no one could have predicted the massive disruption to the U.S. national and global economy to come and that would persist throughout the year.
For companies to recalibrate, grow and thrive amidst these new economic realities that could have long-lasting impacts, competitive differentiation is critical— perhaps now more than ever.
The ability of big data and analytics to boost competitive differentiation and help organizations stay ahead of change has helped forward-thinking corporations for years and will guide those corporations through these tough times. Despite the power of big data and the analytic overlays increasingly available many still resist for a variety of reasons, particularly amongst IP professionals. These tumultuous times now require all corporations to catapult these tools to the top of the corporate agenda.

Discover how best to identify research topics that fit market/industry requirements and how to assess novelty of research topics.
Academic and research institutions have specialized facilities and talent to support industrial development. With these institutions facing a greater risk due to funding cuts, it is becoming increasingly important to focus on the most relevant topics for research. Funding agencies review research topics for originality and its likelihood to yield positive results. An original idea increases the chances of generating high quality inventions for protection, which can be exploited commercially through the patent system to create more revenue for the university.

The evolving global innovation landscape is reshaping the very nature of patent intelligence as we know it. Multiple forces – some predictable and some unforeseen yet disruptive innovation brought about by global events – are increasingly raising complex business questions.
IP plays an essential role in the teaching and research functions of universities. IP helps universities to improve their ranking, institute an innovation ecosystem, incubate innovative ideas, generate revenue through licensing and spinoff start-ups. Every stakeholder, be it administrators, faculties or researchers, needs to know the basics of IP and learn how to get value from existing IPs by identifying, protecting, managing and commercializing them.
While ideation is never easy, our recent analysis of the top of the global innovation ecosystem points to a tougher environment than ever before. Ideas filed at patent offices around the world proliferate, with 6.4 million patent documents published last year alone.
Simultaneously, sources of invention multiply and diversify while technologies converge and blend, intensifying competition. Staying on top in this rapidly evolving and unprecedented landscape requires innovators to invest greater resources, involve more people, review more data, watch more competitors, and protect ideas more wisely.
