Measuring reputation

Reputation is a nebulous quality; you can’t hold it in your hand or point to it on a wall, but an institution’s reputation can dictate its future path of success. An institution’s reputation enables it to grow its endowment, engage in collaboration with other institutions both regionally and internationally, fund its existing researchers, and attract new faculty and students from around the globe.

Reputation can’t be held, but it can be measured, and the Clarivate Analytics Global Institutional Profiles Project Academic Reputation Survey has been doing just that for the past nine years. Invitations to participate in the reputation survey are sent to academics and researchers anonymously by a third-party survey company, balanced by region and subject area to account for varying levels of research activity in regions around the globe.  The survey is offered in nine languages and includes 105 specialty areas. Questions in the survey are crafted in such a way as to be as relevant and discipline-specific as possible. Respondents have the opportunity to select both the largest and most well-known institutions as well as smaller, more specialized organizations within their chosen discipline. Topics included in the survey include both teaching and research quality.

Reputation can’t be held, but it can be measured, and the Clarivate Analytics Global Institutional Profiles Project Academic Reputation Survey has been doing just that for the past nine years.

Clarivate Analytics then collects and combines paper and citation count data with unique data on reputation, staff and student makeup, and funding to create a 360 degree view of all aspects of an institution’s performance in the Global Institutional Profiles Project. The Profiles Project is the analytical power behind such ranking programs as the US News & World Report Best Global Universities Ranking and the Russian Round University Ranking. Select data collected are also used in our own InCites Benchmarking & Analytics product. A sample of what reputational data can tell us about institutions around the world can be found here.

If you are one of the select recipients of the Academic Reputation Survey request, please take the time to take the survey. In addition to contributing to the development of a comprehensive set of profiles of the leading academic institutions around the globe, Clarivate Analytics and our survey partner are offering a charity incentive for completed surveys. If you complete the survey, we will make a donation to the following:

  • Doctors without Borders/Médecins sans Frontières was founded in 1971, and is an “international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from healthcare. MSF offers assistance to people based on need, irrespective of race, religion, gender, or political affiliation.”
  • Kiva, founded in 2005, is a non-profit microlender, which “connects people through lending to alleviate poverty.” By lending money through the Internet, people can help aspiring entrepreneurs in low-income areas achieve their goals.
  • Trees for the Future is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1989 to help communities around the world plant trees, with the goal of alleviating poverty, eliminating hunger, and healing the environment. Since 1989, they have planted almost 150 million trees.

The Academic Reputation Survey runs from mid-March to the end of April; data collection for the Profiles Project is currently underway, and runs through May.
