Open research and open access

Supporting open research initiatives with trusted intelligence, data & tools

At Clarivate, we support the goals of open research because we believe it’s the best way to join the dots and make the process of scientific discovery faster, more robust and more transparent.

We know that navigating the transition to open research is important to our customers, and we endeavor to help them make that transition as seamless as possible with the tools and intelligence they need.

The academic community needs access to trustworthy research regardless of publishing model. They want to know that they can read the full text of an article when they click on it and that they can access the underlying data. And they want to know that the funding is trackable and transparent.

When the article is easily accessible and shareable, the dots are easier to join, the connections are explicit, and collaborations are more natural and meaningful. The process of scientific discovery is faster, and it is easier to ensure research integrity and reproducibility.

Researchers

Can confidently discover, build on and access millions of OA articles from rigorously selected sources among the searches they already perform every day across the Web of Science.

Institutions

Can know that they are providing their users with a comprehensive view of trusted OA content, while delivering easier access to more free full text – extending their library budgets and supporting open research initiatives.

Publishers

Benefit from increased exposure and usage of their OA content. Web of Science links directly to the publisher’s OA or free-to-read version whenever possible – helping researchers find the publisher version first as part of their natural search and discovery processes.

Clarivate has a long tradition of supporting open research. Here are some examples:

  • We’ve invested in open science and the open community through a generous grant to non-profit Impactstory/Our Research
  • We were the first to ensure our customers could easily access peer-reviewed OA content by embedding this data in the Web of Science
    • Our data is the best combination of robust OA data and editorial curation. Because some citation databases exclude Green OA and/or lack stringent selection criteria, the Web of Science remains the only publisher-neutral citation database that comprehensively covers editorially controlled OA
  • We invest in open tools – as a founding sponsor of ORCID in 2010/11, we donated the code from ResearcherID to get it off the ground
  • We enable one-click access to the best, legal version of full-text articles for researchers through EndNote Click
  • We help institutions to track usage and understand the impact of OA content
  • We increase transparency by helping funders track the usage and impact of the OA content they fund
  • We help publishers understand where OA funding is coming from, and how they might manage OA transitions
  • We enable transparency and openness in peer review through the Web of Science and ScholarOne
  • We use our data to help shed light on a complicated and moving research landscape (see our ISI Global Research Report on Plan S)
  • Through the Data Citation Index, we make open research data more discoverable and help researchers and funders track the impact of their data
  • Our Master Journal List displays the OA credentials of participating journals using TOP Factor
  • The Journal Citation Reports help the research community to understand how gold OA content contributes to the literature and influences scholarly discourse
  • We support the Open Access Monitor (OA Monitor) Germany with the provision of Web of Science publication, grant and funding data to increase the impact of scientific scholarship and to enable more equitable participation in research and help policymakers gauge the status of the transformation to OA
  • The Preprint Citation Index™ in the Web of Science can be used as a single portal to search preprints alongside journals, books, proceedings and datasets – streamlining the research process and helping make important connections faster
