Below, Dr Quaderi explains why she should be elected to the CrossRef Board.
My background in academia and publishing together with my current role at the Web of Science Group provides me with a clear understanding of the limitations of the current data infrastructures supporting the discovery, citing, linking and assessment of research outputs and ideas for initiatives to improve scholarly communications.
I have a degree in Chemistry from the University of Oxford and a PhD in Molecular Genetics from Imperial College, London. I went on to do a post-doc at the Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine in Milan then returned to London to establish my own lab at the MRC Institute of Developmental Neurobiology at King’s College London to study the embryonic function of a gene I discovered to be responsible for a rare birth defect called Opitz Syndrome.
Crossref’s commitment to a culture of openness and transparency mirrors my own post-academic pursuit of universally accessible research, making sure that our industry provides places where people can come to find trusted, high-quality content. I was Editorial Director at BMC, a pioneer of the open access (OA) movement and Publishing Director at Springer Nature, with overall responsibility for the portfolio of OA Nature Research journals.
In my current role as Editor-in-Chief for the Web of Science, I have overall responsibility for setting editorial strategy, and for the policy and practices governing the selection process for the Web of Science. I oversee the team of in-house editors that selects content for the Web of Science Core Collection. We promote and protect the Web of Science’s legacy and reputation for excellence, while remaining publisher-independent and innovating to meet the evolving needs of the community.
As a woman of Bangladeshi heritage in STEM, in all my roles I have worked to build environments where diversity, equality, and gender parity are championed and valued. At the Web of Science Group, I have been honored to facilitate insightful discussions for International Women’s Day, taking parts in events to encourage women in STEM. I am part of the Women@Clarivate group, an initiative to help women across our parent company grow in their careers.
If I were elected to the CrossRef board, I would help to increase the impact of existing CrossRef initiatives. I aim to bring fresh ideas, based on the diversity and experience of the Web of Science Group to the board. I would promote diversity of views, open science and excellence in research.
