Dwarfed in size and innovation by Texas’ flagship markets Dallas and Houston but carrying Texas’ trademark rapid population growth and high uninsured rate, San Antonio is focused on capital and service-line expansions that attract insured residents, help fill care gaps, and sharpen provider competition. University Health, the market’s safety-net hospital, is pursuing a venture with UT Health San Antonio to jointly build a dedicated specialty care and research hospital. Robust clinical integration using a shared Epic EMR could follow. The market’s risk tolerance is low but growing, with a new risk-based ACO contract spearheaded by UnitedHealthcare’s OptumCare-owned WellMed Medical Group. Humana, too, is driving patient-centered care through a new partnership with Cano Health to open four senior-focused primary-care centers throughout San Antonio.
