New Jersey transitioned to a state-run exchange in 2020 using the GetCoveredNJ platform. Horizon BCBS of New Jersey, the state's largest insurer, won an exclusive contract for the New Jersey active employees and retirees. Low- and no-premium Medicare Advantage plans continue to be the most popular choice among seniors in the state. Besides the state-imposed individual mandate and a reinsurance program, increased competition due to the entry of new insurers (Braven Health Plan joining in 2021 and WellCare in 2022) on the exchange marketplace led to increased enrollment and a decrease in premiums. On the commercial insurance front, tiered-network plans are becoming favored among individuals and employers for 2022.
