Missouri | 2023 | Health Plan Analysis (Event Driven)

UnitedHealthcare remains the dominant player in Missouri's commercial insurance landscape with massive enrollment, followed by Anthem, Cigna, CVS Health-owned Aetna, and BlueCross BlueShield Kansas City. On the health insurance exchange, Missouri has 10 participating carriers in its public health insurance marketplace including CVS-owned Aetna joining the marketplace for 2022 and UnitedHealthcare in 2023. Three existing insurers — namely Celtic, Medica, and Oscar — expanded coverage. Medicaid expansion officially began in Missouri in October 2021. Sign-ups began in August 2021, and more than 64,000 people have been approved as part of the expansion. On May 2, 2022, the state announced MO Medicaid managed care contract awards to incumbents Centene/Home State Health Plan, Anthem/Missouri Care, and UnitedHealthcare. Enrollment trends and payer activity indicate that Medicare Advantage is a steady growth area for carriers in Missouri. While volatility and political uncertainty cloud other sectors of the health insurance market, Medicare Advantage is a reliable opportunity, and is expected to remain that way as an increasing number of baby boomers retire each year.
