DRG Epidemiology’s coverage of polycythemia vera comprises epidemiological estimates of key patient populations in the major mature pharmaceutical markets (the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Japan). We report both the diagnosed incidence and diagnosed prevalence of polycythemia vera for each country, as well as annualized case counts projected to the national population.
Most patient populations are forecast over a period of 20 years for the major mature pharmaceutical markets.
DRG Epidemiology’s polycythemia vera forecast will answer the following questions:
- How will changes in the levels of exposure to known risk or protective factors affect the number of people diagnosed with polycythemia vera per year?
- How will demographic trends, such as population aging and improving life expectancy, affect the epidemiology of polycythemia vera over the forecast period?
All forecast data are available on the DRG Insights Platform in tabular format, with options to download to MS Excel. All populations are accompanied by a comprehensive description of the methods and data sources used, with hyperlinks to external sources. A summary evidence table generated as part of our systematic review of the epidemiological literature is also provided for full transparency into research and methods.
In addition to the total number of cases for each forecast year, DRG Epidemiology provides at least 10 years of forecast data for the following polycythemia vera subpopulations:
- Diagnosed incident cases.
- Diagnosed prevalent cases.
- Diagnosed incident cases by mutation (JAK2V617F, TP53).
Note: Coverage may vary by country.

Nishant Kumar, M.P.H., is a senior director on the Epidemiology team at Clarivate. His areas of expertise are oncology and CNS diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. His key interests in oncology are modeling disease progression and drug-treatable incident and prevalent populations. Previously, Mr. Kumar sized patient populations for rare and niche diseases, such as graft-versus-host disease and Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He earned his M.P.H. with a concentration in epidemiology and statistics from King’s College in London and a B.Sc. (Honors) in medical studies from the University of Birmingham.
